Health Center Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need an appointment, or can I just walk in whenever I have a problem?

A: We will always see you for an emergency without an appointment.  However, you may have to wait a while in the waiting room until we can squeeze you in.  We always have appointments available the same day or the next day, so, if you can call ahead, please do!

Q: Will you tell anyone that I have been seen for an appointment, or what my problem is?

A: No, unless yours or someone else’s life is in danger.  New York State law requires that we obtain your consent before releasing any information about you to anyone else.  All of our services are completely confidential.

Q: Do I need to bring a parent with me?

A: No.  However, parents are always welcome to come with you, and we encourage that they do.  If your parent has any special concerns about your health, and is unable to come with you for your visit, s/he needs to let us know, either by phone or in writing.  Of course, if s/he is not with you, and wants to know what happens, we cannot give her/him any information without your consent.

Q: Will I see a real doctor?

A:
Yes.  All of our health center staff are licensed and certified health professionals.  In fact, many of our staff have received special education, training and certification specifically in the care of adolescents.  Threshold’s doctors are two of the Adolescent Medicine Specialists in Rochester.

Q: How much will it cost?

A:  We ask people over 18 to pay a reduced fee according to their income.  We will never refuse care because you are unable to pay. We accept all insurance plans and Medicaid.

Q: Will I need an exam to get birth control?

A: No, it may not be necessary at the first visit.  We will, however, ask you many questions about your health.  Our doctors and nurses want to be sure you are healthy and disease free.

Q: What is the Morning After Pill?

A: The Morning After Pill, or Emergency Contraception, is actually not one pill, but several tablets of regular birth control pills.  It is not RU486, the pill used for terminating a pregnancy.
In order for the Morning After Pill to work, it must be taken within 3 days of unprotected sexual intercourse; it does not work if you are already pregnant.
