About Us

Threshold Center for Alternative Youth Services, Inc. (Threshold) has uniquely promoted adolescent wellness in Rochester since 1973.  Through its three integrated service componets (Health Care, Prevention Services and The Learning Center), Threshold fosters improved physical and mental health, educational attainment, employability, life skills, and healthy choices for youth and young adults ages 12 – 25.

Threshold’s primary services include:  Health Care, Prevention Services and The Learning Center/Job Readiness.   A recent formal affiliation with The Community Place of Greater Rochester, Inc. (CPGR) and relocation to CPGR’s 145 Parsells site has enhanced Threshold’s service delivery.

Threshold and CPGR have a longstanding relationship and similar missions and philosophy about increasing access and reducing disparities.  For ten years, Threshold has operated a highly-utilized part-time health center at Community Place’s Parsells location.  Threshold also operates a school-based Health Center at Franklin High School.

Threshold’s Health Center was founded in 1973 by the University of Rochester’s Department of Pediatrics, Division of Adolescent Medicine to serve the youth of the Rochester community.  The relationship with the University of Rochester remains today.

Services are provided by a diverse and culturally competent group of caring adults.  The professional staff includes: physicians, nurse practitioners, teachers, social workers, vocational specialists, drug and alcohol prevention counselors and health educators.  Volunteers and college interns provide clerical and support services.

With a staff of 22 and an annual operating budget of $1.9 million, Threshold meets important needs in the community. The affiliation between Threshold and CPGR was formalized in July 2008 and benefits both organizations and their consumers.  Threshold operates all of its programs at 145 Parsells Avenue, creating more efficient and effective utilization of space and an even more comprehensive service portfolio.  CPGR provides administrative services (HR, Finance, etc.) to Threshold, reducing Threshold’s administrative costs.  Threshold now maintains a balanced budget based on conservative revenue projections and realized savings in rent and administration.  Both organizations maintain their own Boards of Directors and 501(c)3 status.

Threshold Center 2010 Annual Report is now available on-line.  content/docs/Threshold-2010Report-web2-0411.pdf

“I use the health center when I need something, or when I don’t feel good. It’s like a doctor’s office. They help me with my problems, and they care about the kids.”
